Haiti leaves Mexico almost out of the Women’s World Cup | Sports

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Roselord Borgella, Nérilia Mondésir and Sherly Jeudy each scored for Haiti, which virtually eliminated Mexico from the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the Paris Olympics, beating them 3-0 Thursday in the CONCACAF W Championship.

Borgella first shook the nets at 14, Mondésir extended at 67 and Jeudy sealed the score at 78 for the visitors, who won their first game and continue to aspire to go to the World Cup and the next Olympics.

The Mexicans suffered their second loss and now require a miracle: defeat the United States on Monday and hope that Haiti defeats Jamaica in the last date to aspire to an international playoff.

The embarrassing defeat at home continues a string of failures for the Mexican soccer teams. A couple of weeks ago, the men were also left out of the U20 World Cup and the Olympic Games after losing in the quarterfinals of the qualifying round held in Honduras.

Haiti’s win also gave the Americans a spot in the semifinals. The second ticket of the group and the one that goes to the repechage as third will be settled next Monday when Haiti and Jamaica collide.

The Haitians took the lead when defender Stephanie Mayor took a penalty in the 12th minute and Borgella converted with a powerful shot through the center of the goal.

The Caribbean extended their advantage in a counterattack in which Mondésir was brought down by goalkeeper Emily Alvarado for a penalty that the same striker took and converted with a shot through the center of the goal.

At the end, Jeudy gave the commitment a beating by converting with a free kick that entered Alvarado’s right corner.

UNITED STATES, WITHOUT DISHES

With a brace from Sophia Smith in the first 10 minutes, the United States women’s team set foot in the 2023 World Cup by beating Jamaica 5-0 in the CONCACAF W Championship.

Smith opened the account in the fifth minute and added a goal in the eighth for the Americans, who are the big favorites in the tournament in Monterrey, a city in northern Mexico.

The United States added its second victory to consolidate itself as group leader and is classified for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The United States is a powerhouse in women’s soccer, having won the last two World Cups.

Rose Lavelle added a goal in the 59th, Kristie Mewis scored another in the 83rd, while Trinity Rodman, daughter of former NBA player Dennis Rodman, sealed the score in the 85th.

Eight countries play the tournament and the top two teams from each group qualify for the World Cup. The two third-place teams will advance to a 10-team intercontinental playoff in New Zealand in February.

The winner of the W Championship will also qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
