A Wimbledon spectator who had to leave the stands for 15 minutes after being severely criticized by tennis pro Nick Kyrgios in the final has defended herself against the accusation that she was drunk.

The woman told The Sun newspaper on Monday that she had only had two drinks but was suffering from the heat. “It was the temperature, I didn’t have a hat on,” said the 32-year-old. “I’m really sorry.”

Spectator has to leave the stands for 15 minutes

Kyrgios felt disturbed by the woman when he lost to Novak Djokovic. She had “about 700 drinks,” he complained to the referee, who then issued a warning. The spectator, who said she just wanted to cheer on Kyrgios, was given a bottle of water and allowed to return to her seat after 15 minutes.

“He always says the crowd is against him,” she said, “and I wanted to show him that we support him, I wanted to encourage him.” With Kyrgios, however, it was different. “I’m playing in the Wimbledon final against one of the best players in history,” he said. “I don’t need someone to talk nonsense to me every point.”

However, the 27-year-old didn’t blame her for losing the final. “I wouldn’t say it cost me the game,” he said. In his first Grand Slam final, the Australian lost to the now seven-time Wimbledon winner Djokovic 6: 4, 3: 6, 4: 6, 6: 7 (3: 7).

Heated duel against Tsitsipas in the border area of what is permissible and tolerable

Kyrgios had already caused a stir in his match in the round of 32 when he threw number four seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas out of the Wimbledon tournament in a highly emotional duel with plenty of arguments.

Against his former doubles partner from Greece, Kyrgios scolded his way through the match, snapped at the linesman and referee Damien Dumusois, and there was hardly a break between the rallies and service games without antics or chatter from the “bad boy”. Until Tsitsipas lost his temper.

After losing the second set, the Greek threw the ball into the crowd in frustration, seemingly without hitting anyone. The warning was still logical, just a bad joke for Kyrgios, he wanted disqualification. He called the referee, when he made no other decision, Kyrgios freaked out.

Kyrgios infuriates opponents

“Are you stupid?” he snapped at referee Dumusois: “You’re a disgrace, you change the rules as you like.” The slugfest that ensued was one the posh All England club had seldom seen since John McEnroe’s day.

Tsitsipas blew the fuses, he aimed at Kyrgios several times and later openly admitted the intention: He wanted to “stop” him: “It has to stop, it’s not okay, someone has to sit down and talk to him.”

Tsitsipas saw himself as a victim of bullying and called for the consequences of all players. “I hope we come up with something to make our sport cleaner. We shouldn’t accept, tolerate or allow this behavior.” He only got mockery from Kyrgios: “He’s so soft.” Like all opponents in Wimbledon. His boys at home on the basketball court are really “tough dogs”. (dpa/afp/hub)
