Good news for the Red Flames: Italy and Iceland draw | European Women’s Championship 2022

Italy and opening stages, it’s not a good combination at the European Championship in England. Just like against France, the Italian women immediately started from behind: a trademark long throw-in from Jonsdottir did not go away and Viljhalmsdottir took advantage: 0-1.

Italy was upset and got little done before half-time, but that changed after the national coach’s pep talk in the dressing room. Substitute Bonansea reached the back line and the infiltrating Bergamaschi equalized: 1-1.

That same Bonansea was unlucky moments later that the post kept her from the 2-1. Both teams then had plenty of chances to grab the win, but the finish failed.

With one point, Italy and Iceland don’t make much progress, the smiling third is Belgium. If the Red Flames can beat Italy on the group’s final day, they have a good chance of reaching the quarter-finals. Unless Iceland can stunt against France.
