Formula 1: Verstappen mates Mercedes and widens his lead in the championship

A perfectly realized comeback. After missing his qualifying sessions due to mechanical problems, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won on Sunday at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Behind the Dutchman, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) maneuvered very well to take 2nd place ahead of his teammate George Russell, poleman for the first time in his career. “I didn’t expect to win this race, we always stopped at the right time,” said the winner of the day after the race.

However, before taking off at the head of the Grand Prix, Max Verstappen had a little scare when he spun alone on the 42nd lap when he had just overtaken Charles Leclerc. It was therefore necessary for the world champion to come back on the Monegasque a second time to pass him again without difficulty due to Ferrari’s poor choice of tires.

Indeed, Charles Leclerc had just put on hard tires even though the Alpines had shown that the performance of these tires was not good. Behind this bad strategic choice of the Italian team were also hiding performances less good than the Red Bulls and the Mercedes. Starting 3rd on the grid, Carlos Sainz could only take 4th place and Charles Leclerc 6th. Thanks to this 8th success this season, Max Verstappen takes off a little more in the championship.

On the French side, Esteban Ocon (Alpine), winner in Hungary last year, finished ninth, while Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri), who left the pit lane after changing his power unit, had to settle for 12th place.
