157 kilometers long, of which well eighty kilometers will be pure nervousness. Even at 2 p.m., when the star shot will sound in Lille, there will already be some talk of that. After 37 kilometers the peloton, or at least the breakaways, will arrive at the intermediate sprint, after which the focus will soon enough go to the cobblestone sections.

In total, there are eleven cobblestone sections in northern France in the last eighty kilometers of this stage, of which the first (Fressain a Villes-au-Tertre) is 1400 meters long. There was immediately something to do here, as these cobblestones initially went downhill. A few teams spoke of this as a disgrace, after which the ASO chose eggs for its money and now goes the other way.

If there are already gaps, there is enough time to make some repairs: Twenty kilometers later the next strips follow, about five in twenty-five kilometers. The other five sections can be divided equally over the last thirty kilometers of this exciting ride.

We finish in Arenberg, just about before the gate to hell: the Forest of Wallers. We don’t visit that famous stretch from Paris-Roubaix ourselves, but we do visit a few other well-known stretches such as those to Erre d’Wandagnies and Hasnon a Wallers, the last cobblestone section of the day. After these stones there will be another five kilometers to the finish. In total, just over nineteen kilometers of strips have to be conquered, of which you can find an overview below.

One man has made a big goal of this cobblestone ride and then you usually better put it away: you can taste that in everything the first week of Mathieu van der Poel this Tour de France revolves around this cobblestone stage to Arenberg. The Dutchman, for whom it is after the show of Wout van Aert If it becomes difficult to get a yellow card yesterday, it will therefore start as the top favorite for this stage.

We normally place Van Aert next to that, but for this ride he has to do with the Roglic/Vingegaard factor. The classification riders have to be dragged over the cobblestones and Van Aert will therefore not be able to race to his heart’s content in a possible long final.

In addition to Van der Poel, a lot of specialists have traveled to the Tour. Paris-Roubaix winner Dylan van Baarle will have to slave, other contenders like Yves Lampaert, Florian Senechal (Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl), Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious) en Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) will probably get more freedom.

Right next to it, sprinters, often bony types, are not out. Dylan Groenewegen (BikeExchange), Fabio Jakobsen (Quick Step), Alexander Kristoff (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix), Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) in Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies); they all know how to drive over the cobblestones and they can quickly arrive in Arenberg.

There are also a lot of long-term men present. Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) has undoubtedly touched on this stage, but may face competition from other similar types such as Florian Vermeersch (Lotto Soudal), Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-EasyPost) and Max Walscheid (Cofidis). We expect guys like Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) and Nils Politt (BORA-hansgrohe) to have to do servants.

Finally, the all-rounders, who often surface in this kind of crazy Tour rides. Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) has done an excellent job on the cobblestones in the Tour in the past, while for Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates) will be his first foray into racing.
