Dortmund reinforcement with a serious diagnosis. What does the medical examination not reveal?

Sébastien Haller has barely looked around in Dortmund and is already facing a fatal challenge. Doctors diagnosed him with testicular cancer. The water carriers deal with what this means for the players and the club and how it usually goes during medical examinations of footballers.

In London’s West Ham, he did not do very well in terms of shooting or playing. Sébastien Haller got off to a perfect start only when he was given a new refuge in Amsterdam’s Ajax. The French native managed to score a total of 47 goals in the colors of Ajax during a season and a half. It only took him 66 games.

It’s no wonder that Borussia Dortmund eyed him as a replacement for Norwegian super-gunner Erling Haaland, who left for Manchester City. “There’s a new sheriff in town,” proclaimed Borussia’s marketing campaign.

But before he could shoot himself, Haller was surprised by very unpleasant news. German doctors diagnosed him with a testicular tumor.

Did the medical exam fail?

The water carriers discussed what all a professional footballer must undergo during a transfer medical examination. “Every reinforcement has to go through such a process. In this way, the club verifies the footballer’s fitness to play. Nobody wants to take the risk of acquiring a player who is physically crippled,” says Karel Tvaroh, a former Sparta player.

“Doctors primarily focus on cardiac activity. With physiotherapists, you will go through various exercises that will reveal your mobility, you will discuss previous injuries and illnesses with them. This is followed by a series of physical – and sometimes psychological – tests. However, as far as I know, oncological findings are not normally dealt with in such examinations. At least not in the country,” adds Tvaroh.

“Haller has already shown in the past that German football is good for him. He tasted the Bundesliga in the colors of Frankfurt, from where he went to West Ham. I do not believe that the famous club doctors of Borussia would fail. It will be more likely that the problem occurred later. It is understandably a big shock for the club and the players. We wish them only the best,” adds moderator Jaromír Bosák.

In the podcast, you will learn more about Haller’s football history and the philosophy of Ajax, which is famous – among other things – for its economic maturity.
