DFB Cup, 1st round: St. Pauli happily muddles through against Straelen

As of: 07/30/2022 3:29 p.m

FC St. Pauli have reached the second round of the DFB Cup, but the victory at fourth division SV Straelen was anything but comfortable.

The Hamburgers won happily on Saturday (07/30/2022) 4: 3 (2: 2). Shortly before the final whistle, outnumbered after a red card against Manolis Saliakas, the guests scored the decisive goal after a free kick and a detour through the post.

St. Pauli, who had started the season well with four points from two games, revealed glaring weaknesses on the defensive. Straelen knew how to take advantage of that and definitely deserved an extension.

Compensation St. Pauli after a great chance to make it 2-0

The second division dominated events in the early stages and led 7-0 in the shot-on-scoring statistics when they fell behind in the relevant statistics with 0-1. Said Harouz played a fine pass to Jaron Vicario, who scored with a powerful low shot from a very tight angle (19′).

A counterattack offered the team of coach Sunday Oliseh, who played 139 Bundesliga games between 1995 and 2005 for 1. FC Köln, Borussia Dortmund and VfL Bochum, even a chance to make it 2-0. In return, Hamburg then equalized.

Nshimirimana scores on debut

Eric Smith made it 1-1 (25′) with a deflected free kick from the side of the penalty area. Also after a standard situation, St. Pauli steered the game into the expected path. Jakov Medić headed a free-kick from Swede Smith into the net (40′).

But the regional league, which is also financially supported by President Hermann Tecklenburg, husband of German national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, hit back. With a pass that was as simple as it was precise, Joep Munsters reached his colleague Amoros Nshimirimana.

The newcomer from the U21s of the Dutch second division team Willem II Tilburg, who had only been allowed to play the day before, didn’t hit the ball properly at the end, but still found his way into the net to make it 2-2 (42nd).

“Joker” Otto stings, but Smarsch misses

The FC St. Pauli coach then showed his well-known good hand after a good hour’s play. He brought David Otto into the game, who had switched to Millerntor from SSV Jahn Regensburg. Barely a minute on the field, Otto headed in a perfect cross from Johannes Eggestein to make it 3-2 (62nd).

The red card against Saliakas for gross foul play seemed a bit harsh, but it was certainly not the reason for SV’s equalizer again. Goalkeeper Dennis Smarsch was fooled by Vicario with a harmless free kick. The ball hit the first post to make it 3:3 (80′).

All the signs were pointing to extra time, but in added time a Smith free-kick smacked the post and found its way over the back of Medić, the official scorer.
