The good news of the day from London came before lunch: Sara Däbritz returned to team training on Wednesday morning. The midfielder from Olympique Lyon has only been able to train individually in the English capital in the past few days due to muscular problems. If nothing unforeseen happens, the 27-year-old can play in the first German group game against Denmark on Friday (9 p.m., LIVE! on kicker).

The game in London’s Brentford district is sold out, as is Germany’s second European Championship appearance at the same location against Spain next Tuesday (9 p.m.). This increases the anticipation in the DFB camp for the tournament even more. “It’s been tingling for a long time. And here in England it’s something different again. It makes a football heart beat faster,” says Giulia Gwinn from runner-up Bayern Munich. The German defender was one of the great discoveries at the World Cup in France three years ago, scoring the winning goal in the first group match against China in Rennes. “That goal is something very special,” recalled Gwinn, who is virtually unrivaled for her position on the right flank.

The situation with Laura Freigang is different. The Eintracht Frankfurt player is third in the internal striker ranking behind Alexandra Popp (VfL Wolfsburg) and Lea Schüller (Bayern Munich). “I am aware of my role and I accept it,” says the 24-year-old. “I’m there when I’m needed.” Freigang is one of those players for whom team spirit is always the top priority. “We’re a strong community,” she reveals. That gives hope for the European Championship.
