Czech goalkeeper Jiří Pavlenko failed to do this. Werder faced Karlsruhe in preparation and the 30-year-old native of Hlučín scored the only goal of the visiting team.
Pavlenka wanted to play the ball towards the right defender, but instead hit the back of his own stopper. The ball bounced right under the feet of the Swiss striker Simon Rapp, who opened the score of the match with an easy shot.
