The classifications in category A for the 2022/’23 season have been published today. From this moment on, the classifications can be seen on football.nl, both on the website and in the app. In this post we list a number of important changes for the 2022/’23 season and communicate the most important dates for the start of the cup tournament and the competition.

Change in team offerings

Teams had the opportunity to indicate for the first time last season whether they want to switch horizontally in the 2022/’23 season. This means that teams could switch from match day while maintaining level of play. A total of 53 teams made use of this option.

For the 2022/’23 season, the offer of teams on Saturday and Sunday has undergone a significant shift due to the switch from match day. The number of groups on Saturday as well as on Sunday therefore differs from last season. In addition, due to the total number of teams available, sometimes also regionally, it is no longer self-evident that a group consists of 14 teams. In order to prevent situations from arising in which associations, especially in the lower classes, were confronted with long travel distances, a smaller number of teams per group was chosen where appropriate.

Sporting wishes and geographical division

A sporty and exciting competition format is paramount for the KNVB in the divisions of the competitions. The starting point is to meet the sporting wishes of the associations as much as possible. In addition to the sporting aspect, the competition division also looks at the most optimal geographical division for the associations. The KNVB strives to set up competitions with more opponents from the area, resulting in more derbies, less travel distances at away matches and more spectators at the matches. Depending on the level and the associations that come out at a certain level, this is unfortunately not always possible and a division for a team may be less favorable.

Important dates start cup and competition

The publication of the competition schedule of category A (regular competition) will follow on Saturday, August 27, 2022. The 2022/’23 season will start for the national youth competitions on August 27/28, with the 1st qualifying round of the cup. The other district competitions start a week after the cup pool, on September 3/4. The regular competition for the national youth also starts on September 3/4 and for the other district competitions on September 24/25. For the announcement of the classifications and numbering of category B, we refer to the important dates for the start of the 2022/’23 season.
