British Open Golf 2022: The British Open bans a legend from the 150th anniversary events

La Royal and Ancient Golf Club de St. Andrews (The R&A), which organizes the British Open which starts next week, allowed all the players qualified this year for the tournament to play it, regardless of whether they had joined the Saudi circuit. The R&A considered that whoever had earned their place for this edition could not be vetoed.

However, the punishment has come in the form of I veto the executive director of LIV Golf, the Australian Greg Norman, winner in 1986 and 1993 of the Open. The ‘Shark’ has not been invited to participate in the commemorative act with all the champions on Monday, an important moment as it is the 150th anniversary, nor in the ‘dinner of champions’ which will take place in St. Andrews.

“The 150th Open is an extremely important milestone for golf and we want to make sure that the focus is on celebrating the championship and what it means.”says the R&A in a statement. “Unfortunately, we don’t think it would be like this if Greg attended. We hope that when circumstances allow, Greg will be able to attend again in the future.”

Norman reacted to the news like this: “I’m disappointed. I thought the R&A would have stayed above all thisgiven its position in world golf,” he told the Australian Golf Digest.
