Basketball 3×3 in the Plaza del Pilar

Today and tomorrow Zaragoza is celebrating the Herbalife 3X3 Series FEB Open Zaragoza, a competition that brings the best of this thriving specialty to Plaza del Pilar in the Aragonese capital. In this way, the city continues to show its strength in this sport, which from its origins is linked to the city of the Ebro. This Friday the qualifying and qualifying series were played, while today Saturday the already playing the final series and the triple contest of this specialty that has already achieved official status with the dispute of international championships. In fact, the Aragonese Pedro Meléndez is the Spanish coach.

Zaragoza was a pioneer in this specialty. In 1992, while the 1992 European Pre-Olympic Games (the first competition after the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia) were being played on the central court of the Príncipe Felipe Pavilion to acquire a place for the Barcelona Olympic Games, in the pavilion’s car park many teams, some of them arrived from outside Zaragoza, they began to play 3×3 basketball. Thus, in the summer of 1992, the Aragonese capital was the first European city to host the 3-on-3 ‘Hoop It Up’ tournament.

Since then, these events have taken place periodically in car parks, squares, streets and parks, making it clear that the true essence of basketball beats in Zaragoza. From that initial moment, the Aragonese capital has been a reference for 3×3, due to its history, tradition, level of participation and organizational capacity. This weekend’s tournament does nothing but reiterate the passion for this sport in our land.
