Argentina already knows its group rivals for the South American San Luis


The National Team will face Venezuela, Paraguay and Ecuador in the first phase of the tournament that will be played from August 1 to 6 in our country. The best 4 of the contest will qualify for the Americup.

On this Thursday afternoon and at the FIBA ​​regional office located in Miami, the draw for the South American Senior Women’s Championship was held, which will be played in San Luis from August 1 to 6, with Argentina being part of the Group A together with Venezuela, Paraguay and Ecuador.

Before the draw, the teams were organized in different pots according to the current official FIBA ​​ranking, with two other pots to define the positions in the groups for the calendars. Thus, not only the composition of each zone was determined, but also the order of the matches. With Argentina and Brazil being seeded by the previously mentioned ranking, the balls finished resolving the formation of the groups.

The cast led by head coach Gregorio Martínez will start their itinerary on Monday, August 1, facing Venezuela in their debut. The second rival will be Ecuador, on Tuesday 2; while the first stage of the tournament will close on Wednesday the 3rd with the match against Paraguay. Group B will be made up of Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Uruguay.

The two best teams in the first group stage will advance to the semifinals of the South American and in turn will automatically qualify for next year’s Women’s Americup. The teams that finish in 3rd and 4th places in each zone will go on to play the Reclassification of the tournament. On Thursday there will be rest in the tournament, on Friday the 5th will be the semifinals and on Saturday the 6th the grand final will be played for the championship.

This South American event in San Luis will be key for Argentina, not only because it will present itself as the defender of the crown after winning the last edition of Tunja 2018, but also because it will be the first step towards the Olympic dream of Paris 2024. For this reason, the Qualifying for the Americup will be the first objective to be met within this demanding but long-awaited desire to achieve.
