World tennis number 1, Iga Swiatek, was eliminated in the third round of Wimbledon on Saturday July 2 by Frenchwoman Alizé Cornet, who joined Caroline Garcia and Harmony Tan in the round of 16.

Thunderbolt at Wimbledon. Alizé Cornet, 37e world, achieved the feat of beating world number 1 Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-2, Saturday July 2, in the third round of Wimbledon. The French thus put an end to the series of 37 consecutive victories of the Polish.

During 1h33, Alizé Cornet showed great aggression, scoring 16 winning shots and taking advantage of the total of 33 unforced errors by her opponent, a dizzying figure for the Pole.

“I don’t have the words … It reminds me of my victory against Serena (Williams) eight years ago on this same court which brings me luck”, commented the 32-year-old Frenchwoman hotly. “I knew I could do it. Because if there was a moment to beat her, I knew it was on grass,” added Cornet. She had reached the round of 16 of the Major on grass in 2014 by beating Serena Williams but had not passed the third round in London since.

Iga Swiatek had not lost a match since her elimination in the second round in Dubai in February and had won the six tournaments she has played since: Doha, Indian Wells and Miami on hard courts, Stuttgart, Rome and Roland-Garros on clay. She had even conceded only three sets in her last 29 matches, including the one against Pattinama in the second round of Wimbledon.

Harmony Tan and Caroline Garcia also qualified

Alizé Cornet will face Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (44e), who won over the Czech Barbora Krejcikova (13e).

After Caroline Garcia on Friday, the day was also marked by the victory of Harmony Tan (115e) who crushed Britain’s Katie Boulter (118e and recipient of an invitation), 6-1, 6-1.

“The more the matches progress, the better I feel”, welcomed the Frenchwoman, who had also achieved a feat in the first round by eliminating the returning Serena Williams, on the Center Court where the American had won seven of her 23 Grand Slam titles. “I really enjoy playing on grass,” admitted the 24-year-old, who is competing in her first Wimbledon.

To try to go even further, she, whose best result in a Major was a second round at Roland-Garros 2021 and at the Australian Open last January, will face the American Amanda Anisimova (25e), who dismissed her compatriot and finalist at the last Roland-Garros Coco Gauff (12e) 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 6-1.
