Wyndham Clark leads the Canada Open by a narrow head

Wyndham Clark has yet to win a PGA Tour title. But that doesn’t stop the 28-year-old American from taking the lead at the Canada Open this Thursday night in Toronto. The 293rd player in the world started his week with a scintillating 63 (-7) without the slightest hitch on the course of St. George’s Golf & Country Club.

« I’ve taken the cut several times this year and often landed solid tricksanalyzed Clark. But I couldn’t repeat those good things over an entire tournament. I felt that I was still going in the right direction and today (Thursday), everything fell into place. I hope I can continue this momentum all weekend and next week at the US Open. »

We will have to keep a cool head because behind, the pursuers are very close. Matt Fitzpatrick is just one shot away, as are Doug Ghim and Harold Varner III. Watch out also for Rory McIlroy, defending champion, also perfectly placed in ambush at -4. Justin Thomas, recent USPGA winner, is slightly behind in 21st place at six lengths.

Like the number of top 10s that Matt Fitzpatrick has accumulated on the PGA Tour. The Englishman has still not opened his US Tour victory counter.

The only Frenchman involved in this PGA Tour tournament, Paul Barjon had a very mixed first day. This ideally started with a first birdie from the 3rd and if an error at 6 (bogey) was to be regretted, it was immediately compensated by a new birdie from the next hole.

The outward was thus crossed without incident under the par, but the last nine holes were going to be spoiled. Three bogeys (10, 16 and 17), no points gleaned from the Canadian layout and a final card above par (+2) for the 79th provisional position. Paul Barjon’s driving remained rather incisive in this first round with 12 fairways found, but his putting was not up to par (+1.6 in SG putting).
