Wimbledon: Dominic Thiem withdrew from the British Grand Slam tournament

It’s not really a surprise, but it never gives pleasure. Especially for the interested and lovers of the one-handed backhand. Dominic Thiem officially forfeited Thursday for Wimbledon (June 27-July 10), a tournament he could play thanks to his protected classification. Currently 352nd player in the world, the Austrian has decided to skip the season on grass, preferring to train on clay in recent weeks, in the wake of his elimination in the 1st round of Roland-Garros.

Since his return to competition in April, the former world number 3 has played seven times for … seven defeats including one in Challenger. If he saw progress in his game, Thiem appeared very far from the level which had allowed him to win the US Open in 2020 and to be part of the cadors of the circuit. He therefore decided to focus on work before trying his luck in the tournament again, multiplying the sessions on ochre, his favorite surface, in Austria.

The choice is all the more understandable given that, even at 100% of his means, Thiem has never excelled at the All England Club: his best result on the London turf remains the round of 16 in 2017. During his five other attempts , he was eliminated three times from the start, and twice in the second round.

Thiem: “I’m still looking for the right sensations and I’m far from it”
