Bologna ended the regular season in the lead with 52 points, 4 more than Olimpia, second. Three challenges have been played so far this year: in the Super Cup final Virtus won 90-84, while in the league one victory for each side, both at home. Milan won 102-99 in extra time, Bologna won 83-65.
In the playoffs both have made a clear path winning both the quarterfinals and the semifinals 3-0: Bologna eliminated Pesaro and Tortona, Milan defeated Reggio Emilia and Sassari.

Favorite Bologna

Favorite – even if not with the margin of last year when the 4-0 was a real surprise – is Bologna: because it is the reigning champion, because it has the home factor in favor and because it has added two pawns to an already top-notch roster how Daniel Hackett e Store Shengelia which have raised the quality level not just a little. Moreover, Olimpia has experience and reaches the fresher final of last year, when it was drained of energy by the Euroleague Final Four. But the impression is that in Milan under the basket something is missing compared to the opponents who have a very strong long range in Jaiteh, Shengelia, Alibegovic, Hervey and Sampson. A gap of centimeters that will be compensated by the defensive determination (the Messina brand) and by the work of Hines, Shields, Rodriguez, Hall and Datome.

Scariolo-Messina, the challenge within the challenge

It is also the super challenge between two of the greatest coaches in the history of Italian basketball: Sergio Scariolo for Bologna and Ettore Messina for Milan (read more here). The precedents among them are 7 and Scariolo leads 4-3. For Messina, a great ex, this is the sixth final in his career: he won 4 (3 with Virtus, 1 with Treviso) and lost only one, just last year against Bologna coached by Djordjevic. Scariolo, on the other hand, is in his fourth final: he won one, in 1990 with Pesaro, while he lost two on the Fortitudo Bologna bench (1996 and 2012), his first against Milan.

Previous

In the previous three finals (1979, 1984 and 2021) Virtus Bologna has always beaten Milan (2-0, 2-1 and 4-0). Expanding the speech to the playoffs, there are 8 direct clashes with Bologna, which is 5-3 ahead. The black Vu also prevailed in the semifinal 1995 (3-2) and in the semifinal 2007 (3-1). The Lombards, on the other hand, won in the 1985 quarterfinals (2-0), in the 1996 semifinal (3-1) and in the 2015 quarterfinals (3-0).
