Verstapen wins Canadian ‘Grand Prix’ qualifiers and will start in the first row with Alonso

Red Bull’s Dutch driver Max Verstapen won Saturday in the ninth stage of the Formula One (F-1) World Championship, the Canadian Grand Prix, and Sunday’s race will start in the front row with Fernando Alonso, an experienced Spanish driver.

The milestone in rainy Montreal covered the 4.4-kilometer lap in one minute and 21,299 seconds, winning the second pole-position of the season and his 16th career. Alonso (“Alpine”) was 0.645 seconds slower in his fastest lap, followed by Carlos Sainne Jr. (“Ferrari”) and Lewis Hamilton (“Mercedes”).

George Russell (“Mercedes”) will be the eighth starting number among the drivers of the leading teams, after the accident in the second session Serhio Peres (“Red Bull”) will have to settle for the 13th place, but from the last row the race will start with Charles Clare (“Ferrari”), subject to a penalty of ten starting points for replacement of engine components. Lekler only took part in the first qualifying session on Saturday and did not fight for the highest possible position.

The qualifying was preceded by the third training session, in which Alonso was the fastest.

The leader with 150 points in the overall World Cup standings is Verstapens, the second with 129 points is Serhio Peress, and the third place with 116 points is taken by Lekler. Red Bull has 279 points in the constructors’ cup, Ferrari has 199 points and Mercedes is third in 157 points.

Last year, Verstapen won the first F-1 World Championship title in the final round of the Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi, ahead of seven-time Hamilton, who had the same number of points before the final round.

There are 22 stages in the F-1 calendar this season.
