Ukraine’s Prometey joins the Latvian-Estonian league

In times of war, the Ukrainian Basketball Federation will not host a national championship for the time being. Several other Ukrainian clubs are showing interest in participating in the LIBL tournament in the 2022/2023 season.

Prometey was founded in 2018. Until the summer of 2021, represented Kamyansk (former name – Dneprodzerzhinsk), after which the place of registration was Slobozhansk.

In the 2019 season, the club won first place in the top league tournament and was eligible to play in the Ukrainian Super League. In the 2020 season, the team led by head coach Kārlis Muižnieks took third place in the Super League, but the tournament was not played due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, Prometey finished third in the Super League Main Event, but won the Championship in all three series, winning the title. On February 23, 2022, the team was the leader of the Super League.

In the 2021/2022 season, “Prometey” made its debut in the FIBA Champions League, overcoming the qualifying round and entering the main tournament, from which it left at the end of February 2022.

The club is currently considering applying for the FIBA Champions League or ULEB European Cup next season. The team’s head coach for the second season will be Israeli specialist Ron Ginsburg, known for his work for the Czech national team and CEZ Nymburk.
