The Spanish Judo Cup celebrates 40 years of loyalty to Jaca

The absolute Spanish Judo Cup, in which more than 300 athletes from ten autonomous communities will take part, begins in Jaca next weekend, taking place between June 3 and 5. This competition, which has been taking place in the city for 40 years, is the first scoring event on the national calendar of judo competitions. According to the organization, it is estimated that this sporting event, which was presented this Wednesday, will have a return for Jaca of 80,000 euros.

From a sports point of view, as pointed out by the Sports Councilor of the Jaca City Council, Domingo Poveda, it is “an important event, a maximum competition that begins its sports season in Jaca”. The collaboration of the City Council with the Aragonese Judo Federation and Associated Sports dates back 40 years, when this competition was held for the first time. Since then it has only been interrupted by the covid-19 pandemic.

“Our objective with this type of event is to achieve the deseasonalization of tourism in our city and Right now there is only one period of low occupancy, which is the month of November”, Olvido Moratinos pointed out. The president of the Aragonese Federation of Judo and Associated Sports, José Ángel Hierro, explained that this tournament brings together the “first division” of judo in Spain.

“For this reason, the entire development of the competition will be broadcast by ‘streaming’ and will feature the commissioner of Yolanda Soler, Olympic medalist in Atlanta 1996. These tests are qualifying for the final phase of the Spanish championship in 2023”, he explained. The tests and technical sessions will take place on June 3, 4 and 5 at the Olimpia sports center in the capital of Jacetania.
