The swimming pool at the Cégep Édouard-Montpetit sports center will have a facelift. The Cégep received a $5 million grant from the Government of Quebec to carry out the renovation project for the swimming pool and locker rooms, the cost of which is estimated at nearly $9.9 million.

In concrete terms, the work consists of a complete refurbishment of the 51-meter pool with 6 lanes, a refurbishment of the ceramic beaches, a complete refurbishment of the changing rooms and an upgrading of the ventilation and dehumidification system.

The works are planned from March 2024 to December 2024, when the works of the Olympia swimming pool will be carried out, in order to avoid that the two swimming pools are closed at the same time. The renovation of the Olympia swimming pool is scheduled from October 2022 to January 2024.

Built in 1981, the Cégep’s sports center includes an Olympic swimming pool at the heart of its facilities. The cégep indicates that after more than 40 years of activities at a high rate of use and despite rigorous maintenance, the pool has reached the end of its useful life.

He also points out that the “renovations will be carried out according to the principles of sustainable development and inclusion” and will, among other things, “ensure eco-responsible management of water and energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions greenhouse, as well as to offer universal accessibility to services”.

“It is important for us to ensure the sustainability of our facilities to meet the high demand in the region and to continue to offer a rich range of sports activities, beneficial to physical and mental health,” said the director. General of Cégep Édouard-Montpetit Sylvain Lambert.

Support program

The $5 million grant from the Government of Quebec comes from the new Support Program for Sports and Recreational Facilities in Schools and Higher Education (PSISRSES).

This amount represents the maximum financial assistance under the Program.

The latter aims to increase the number of school sports and recreational infrastructures and to upgrade existing infrastructures to ensure their accessibility to the entire population.
