The Latvian rugby-7 team remains in 11th place in the first stage of the EC ‘Trophy’ division

The Latvian men’s rugby-7 team took 11th place in the first stage of the European Championship “Trophy” division in Zagreb, closing the tournament with success over Bulgaria, the Latvian Rugby Federation informs the portal “Delfi”.

The Latvian rugby-7 national team lost last weekend in the Croatian capital Zagreb in all three Group A games. In the first match with 0:24, the superiority of the strong Romanian team was acknowledged. In the second game, meeting with the Irish athletes, the final result was 0:48. In the third match with 0:26 Denmark had to make concessions.

After three losses in the group, Latvian rugby players had to compete for the finishing places in the tournament. In the semifinals for 9-12. the place was lost to Denmark again at 10:24. Team captain Ivo Kapiņš scored both ground.

In their struggle for the penultimate position, the Latvians finally achieved their first success in the tournament – 10: 5 against Bulgaria. Artūrs Alainis and Reinis Pavinkšnis scored points in favor of Latvia.

The head coach of the national team Arvis Pilenieks commented on the team’s performance after the tournament: “Glad to win the Bulgarian national team and to start the game in the last two matches. “I have to believe in more team strength. I can only praise the boys for their dedication. Everything is in their own hands, because the second stage will take place this week.”

The second European Championship tournament will take place this week in Budapest.
