The jackpot for Yordan Alvarez with the Astros

The Houston Astros have reportedly agreed to a six-year, $115 million contract extension with their hitter of choice Yordan Alvarez.

The deal, reported by the MLB.com website on Friday, has yet to be confirmed by the team. It would be the most lucrative deal for a designated hitter in major league history.

Aged only 24, soon to be 25, Alvarez is already one of the best in his role. Named American League Rookie of the Year in 2019, he hit 14 homers in 45 games to start this season.

For the Astros, this is an interesting contract for the future of the team. Houston’s roster has been unable to retain several good players over the past few years. Outfielder George Springer had rather agreed with the Toronto Blue Jays at the end of the 2020 season, while shortstop Carlos Correa now wears the colors of the Minnesota Twins.

Alvarez, who had to undergo knee surgery in 2020, has batted .287 since the start of his career in 278 regular season games. He also had 75 long runs and 217 RBIs.
