Tennis: Serena Williams wants to know again in Wimbledon – what her big goal is – sports mix

Serena Williams wants to know it again – at the age of 40!

The US tennis star will start in Wimbledon (from June 27) after a break of almost a year. The big goal: win her 24th Grand Slam title and catch up with Margaret Court (79) at the top, finally become immortal!

If Williams won the final on July 9, he would be 40 years, 9 months and 14 days old. Can she really win again? In 2021 she had to give up injured and in tears in the first round.

Now the Wimbledon preparation tournament in Eastbourne, where she plays doubles, shows: The tennis queen has been in her best physical condition since the birth of daughter Alexis Olympia in 2017.

Williams: “Now my body feels great. I didn’t train at first (because of the injury; editor’s note), but I’ve always kept myself semi-fit.”

Is that enough for the Wimbledon victory in singles?

National coach Barbara Rittner (49): “She doesn’t come back to be shot. With the serve, with the punches, she is not to be underestimated. You can trust her. I’m more concerned that she’ll injure herself again before that, because she’ll go all out when she plays against a really good one.”

Davis Cup doctor Dr. Tim Kinateder (56): “If she has a chance, then on grass. On sand it would be almost impossible at that age. You lose explosiveness. But with her game system and her weapons, I think she’s capable of quite a bit.”

Background: Williams’ powerful punches bounce off even faster on grass. So she could keep the rallies shorter and compensate for a lack of fitness.

Kinateder: “The question will be how she puts away the lack of match practice. She can certainly survive a few laps, but I think it is unlikely that she will be enough for the final and victory.”

Another decisive factor: the draw tomorrow. As an unseeded player, Williams (only number 1204 in the world) could immediately meet a top opponent – that would greatly reduce the chances.
