Tennis: Eugenie Bouchard withdraws from Wimbledon

Eugenie Bouchard has decided to forfeit the Wimbledon tournament due to the current ranking rules.

The currently unranked player ensured her presence in the main draw last week by virtue of her protected ranking, also benefiting from the decision of the organizers not to welcome Russian and Belarusian players. Then the ATP and WTA circuits decreed that no points would be awarded to players for equity, which will therefore not affect the ranking of each.

Bouchard thus judged that it was useless for her to use one of her protected entries, not being able to progress in the classification. She also explained her reasoning on Twitter.

“I have a limited number of protected entries, she justified. Although I love Wimbledon, and it saddens me to have to give it up, using one of these entries in a tournament where no points are allowed doesn’t make sense to me. I have to make smart choices and use my tournament entries that will get me back to the level I want. »

The 2014 Wimbledon finalist is recovering from right shoulder surgery. She has not played since March 2021 at the Monterrey tournament.

Quebecer Leylah Fernandez will not be there either due to a stress fracture in her right foot suffered at Roland-Garros. Canadian Bianca Andreeescu will however participate in the tournament.
