Riga will host the World Cup checkers

Starting from July 3, the World Cup stage in 100 squares “Riga Open 2022” will take place in Riga, where the world’s sharpest minds from 10 different countries will compete.

Together with other local and international masters, Latvia will also be represented by the master of checkers Guntis Valneris. The end of the tournament is scheduled for July 9, while on July 10, the forces will be measured in the World Championships for men and women in the 100-square checkers.

After a two-year break in Riga, the best checkers will be determined during the World Cup at the “Fantadroms” event center. The seven-day tournament will bring together leading checkers from countries such as the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Côte d’Ivoire, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso and France. This year, Latvia will be represented by international grandmasters Guntis Valneris, who currently ranks in the top ten in the world rankings, as well as many other masterful players. The current world champion Roels Boomstra from the Netherlands will also join the ranks of the international grandmasters in this tournament. The tournament will be held separately for women and men according to the rules of the World Checkers Federation according to the Swiss system and nine rounds will be played during the week.

It should be noted that this year is special because it is the anniversary year of the World Checkers Federation (FMJD). The Federation has been celebrating its 75th anniversary since its foundation.

The prize fund for the World Cup stage “Riga Open 2022” is 6000 euros.
