Johan Derksen thinks that PSV did not deal well with Mark van Bommel. The former head coach of the Eindhoven club was fired in December 2019 after he booked only two victories in twelve matches. According to Derksen, PSV did not treat him well. The analyst of Today Inside has high expectations of the former Orange international and therefore hopes that he will succeed as a trainer of Royal Antwerp, the club where he will work together with technical director Marc Overmars.

“I have a high opinion of Van Bommel, I hope he succeeds at Antwerp. They have treated them outrageously at PSV, they have broken his career,” Derksen immediately jumps to the rescue for the former PSV head coach. However, the analyst also believes that Van Bommel himself can be blamed. “The problem at PSV was that he interfered with everything. He wanted to turn all the buttons. He thought: I’m the head coach and I have to decide everything† But you have to leave everything that happens around it to the people who are responsible for it. He can’t delegate.”

Van Bommel worked at PSV, among others, with Bert van Marwijk. The former national coach of the Dutch national team and father-in-law does not seem to be going to Antwerp. Van Bommel already has his technical staff around with John Stegeman, Andries Ulderink and Jürgen Dirkx. “If his father-in-law is also on the field, he can be of value,” Derksen continues about the role the two have played together in the past. “They are neighbors in the south, but that is of no use to each other if you have something at the training. Then you have to be there. March that Andries Ulderink … what they should do with it.”

René van der Gijp is a lot more skeptical and has yet to see it with Van Bommel. “I don’t think it will work out with Van Bommel,” said the former PSV player. “I think he has a lot of problems with the things he is less good at. That you know that about yourself. I don’t think he can do that. At VfL Wolfsburg, nobody was sorry that he left. It is often said that he can’t convey it. That feeling that Guardiola and Klopp do have. And Ancelotti,” said Van der Gijp. “These are amateur psychologists”, Derksen adds to his colleague.
