‘Neres leaves Shakhtar and Ukraine for good and leaves for Benfica’

David Neres has finally been released from the frightening situation he ended up with Shakhtar Donetsk last February. The former Ajax player leaves the Ukrainian club for good and leaves for SL Benfica, reports Fabrizio Romano Thursday on Twitter.

In Lisbon, Neres reportedly signs a contract until the summer of 2027. The attacker still has to go through the medical examination. Romano does not mention how much money is involved in the transfer of the Brazilian. It is not clear whether and if so how much Ajax will have left over from the switch.

The team from Amsterdam sold Neres in January of this year for twelve million euros plus any bonuses to Shakhtar. The club made public about the transfer fee to be received, but said nothing at the time about a possible resale percentage, something that was written about in various media in the days and weeks prior to the transfer.

Players at Russian and Ukrainian clubs

If Ajax has negotiated a resale percentage, it is still not certain that the club will receive money for its former public favourite. Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, players for clubs from both countries could (temporarily) look for a new club without that club having to pay a transfer fee. It is unclear whether this transfer is still covered by that arrangement or, as part of the summer window, may be subject to a reassessment by FIFA and UEFA.
