In the throes of recent weeks, Fabio Quartararo has just suffered a violent setback. At the Grand Prix of the Netherlands, this Sunday in Assen, the French world champion fell twice, before giving up. This is his first retirement this year, in eleven races. With a 34-point lead in the world championship over Aleix Espargaro, he will remain the leader in any case, but his mattress could well melt at the end of the weekend.
The Yamaha rider went to the ground for the first time in the fifth of twenty-six laps. Starting second on the starting grid, he got off to a bad start and was quickly overtaken by Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia). It was while trying to recover his second place, in an attempt to overtake on the inside of a bend, that the Frenchman lost control of his bike.
In the gravel, he then got back on his bike and left in last place, one lap behind. A few minutes later, at the same bend, it was the back of his motorcycle that chased him, propelling him over his handlebars. This time, as he hobbled, he preferred not to get back on track.
