Qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix 2022 took place on a wet track. It was won by Max Verstappen. Fernando Alonso started next to him from the front row, for whom it was the first start from the front row after almost 10 years. The second row belonged to Sainz and Hamilton, the third to the Haas riders, the fourth to Ocon and Russell, the fifth to Ricciard and Chou.
Charles Leclerc deployed above-limit power unit components and started from 19th place ahead of Cunoda, who was relegated to the end of the field for the same reason. Sergio Pérez broke down in the qualification and started from 13th place.
Race
Max Verstappen guarded the first position. The order in the top five did not change at the start. Ocon got ahead of Schumacher, who was overtaken by Russell a moment later. But that was just the beginning of the unlucky Sunday of the Haas riders.
After three rounds, Sainz got ahead of Alons using the DRS. Russell overcame Ocon. It was not the last bite for Mercedes drivers. A moment later, he also overtook Magnussen, who damaged his front wing at the start and was signaled by a black flag with an orange wheel. The Danish pilot had to go to the pits a moment later.
Sergio Pérez got up in the qualifiers after the accident. However, after eight laps, he encountered a technical problem and had to quit. A virtual safety car was announced on the track. Verstappen and Hamilton headed for the pits.
Sainz and Alons took the lead. But not for long. After the stop, Verstappen reached Alonso and got in front of him.
Another hit of the race came after 19 laps. Mick Schumacher, who was in the scoring position, had to resign from the race. A virtual safety car was announced on the track. Sainz or Russell went into the pits.
Verstappen was in front of Alons, Sainz, Hamilton and Russell. After finishing the VSC, Sainz got ahead of Alonso. He did not enter the pits until the end of the 28th round and returned to Leclerc, who tried in vain to find a recipe for Ocon.
Monachan built after 41 laps, but his stop was slower. However, he quickly returned to the scoring position on the new set of medium tires.
After 43 laps, Verstappen drove into the pits. He fell for both Sainz and Hamilton. However, he quickly overcame last year’s rival.
In the 49th lap, Cunoda crashed and had a safety car on the track. Sainz took advantage of this and drove into the pits. The Alpine riders did the same.
Verstappen led the race ahead of Sainz, Hamilton, Russell, Ocon, Alons and Leclerc.
After the race restarted, Leclerc got in front of both Alpine riders, but Russell did not finish.
Sainz was just behind Verstappen, but even the DRS did not help him beat Verstappen by the end of the race.
Max Verstappen thus finished for another victory and increased the lead at the head of the championship. Sainz finished second, Lewis Hamilton was third.

19:43: Strategy
19:42: Lando Norris had powertrain problems in qualifying. McLaren replaced some of his components, but they were older pieces, so no penalty.
19:30: But we have other attractions. Fernando Alonso starts from the front row after 3619 days. He will have Sainz and Hamilton behind him. Pérez crashed and starts from 13th place. It will be interesting to watch the haas riders, who are in the third row.
19:29: The starting grid is “interesting” today. We probably can’t expect a duel between Leclerc and Verstappen. The leader of the championship starts from pole position, Leclerc has deployed new powertrain components and is currently in the penultimate position.
19:28: Jacques Laffite won the lowest position in Canada in 1981 – he started from the 10th position.
19:27: Max Verstappen starts from pole position. What positions have been won in Montreal in the past?
19:23: Yesterday’s qualification went on the wet track. Today it is sunny, but the temperatures are lower than these days in Europe – the air is 19 ° C, the track 39 ° C.
19:21: The riders go to the starting grid
19:20: Every proper circuit has its own specialty. In Montreal, it’s the wall of champions. It is at the very end of the circuit and was nicknamed in 1999 by three F1 champions: Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve. The only world champion who did not break down was the race winner Mika Häkkinen.
19:17: The circuit in Montreal brought many interesting races. We can remember the victory of Jenson Button, who got on the wet track at the end of the race in front of Sebastian Vettel. It was written in 2011. Vettel made his debut in 2007, replacing Kubica after his horrific accident in Canada. Kubica also has fond memories of Montreal – he won his only F1 victory here.
19:15: F1 was last driven in Canada in 2019 and it was a controversial race after which Sebastian Vettel moved the parc fermé signs. Other races on the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit were thwarted by covid-19.
19:10: Welcome to the online broadcast of the Canadian Grand Prix 2022.
