FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta says the Super League project is all but dead.

The Super League idea didn’t last long when it was presented. In just a few days, popular rebellion and threats from national associations and continental bodies forced dissident clubs to back down. However, the project is still relevant.. Barça, Real Madrid and Juventus still aim to bring this project to life.

A Super League to fight “state clubs”

This Tuesday, Joan Laporta, the president of FC Barcelona, indicated that the Super League was needed to oppose clubs like Manchester City, Newcastle and PSG. “At the moment we don’t have a competition format for the Super League, it’s a long process, but it serves to make Europe aware that there are ‘state clubs’ that change the competition. There is a total willingness to negotiate with UEFA and I think that in the end the rough edges will be ironed out and a dialogue will be established,” he said.

Statements that come at a time when Javier Tébas, the president of La Liga, has officially lodged a complaint against PSG with UEFA, pointing to the “questionable” management of its finances. The staggering expenditures made by the QSI and Doha still make people cringe on the other side of the Pyrenees.
