Javier Barrios and Daniela Corchón lift the Castilla y León Badminton Team to bronze

The Castilla y León Cadet National Team won the bronze medal in the Spanish Championship of Regional Teams. It was held from last Thursday June 23 to Sunday 26 at the Santander Sports Pavilion.

This achievement is the first metal of the Castilian-Leonese Selection. Thus separating from the podium teams with greater tradition and that usually took over the privileged positions.

Much of this success was based on the players from Soria from the Soria-CS24 Badminton Club academy, Javier Barrios and Daniela Corchón. Both, with nine and ten wins respectively, were the best of the team. Contributing decisively to the achievement of this bronze medal.

In the group stage, the Castilla y León team faced Cantabria, Melilla and Castilla-La Mancha. Giving up only 2 games of the 21 positions at stake.

The most difficult crash

The toughest match of the competition would be, without a doubt, the quarter-final against the Aragonese National Team. The first six games were played with a tie to three wins, two of which were achieved by Daniela and another by Javier. Later, the number one men’s singles of both teams were cited. Demonstrating that Javier Barrios, in addition to his level, has an experience that led him to victory. In this way, he placed his team in the semifinals of the competition.

The draw did not smile at the Sorians, facing the Balearic Islands in the semifinals, who, being the favorites and ultimately the winners, did not give the Castilian-Leoneses any chance of victory.

After recovering from the defeat, during the closing day on Sunday they had to fight for the bronze medal against the Asturians. In a confrontation that was presumed to be very close, they faced Castilla y León with an initial advantage of one point. And thanks to the individual performances by Daniela Corchón and Javier Barrios, they certified the triumph of an excellent championship. With the subsequent joy of climbing the podium to collect the bronze medal.

Undoubtedly, the Federation of Castilla León is beginning to reap the fruits of a job well done in previous years, with a prominent presence from Soria, since Víctor Ortega is the technical director and Juan Manuel Barrera is the president, motors of the development of badminton in the region.
