Michigan vs Oregon Baseball Preview

Teams from Power Five conferences rarely meet on NCAA baseball tournament opening day, but that won’t be the case for Michigan and Oregon.

Michigan (32-26) meets the Oregon Ducks (35-23) in the Louisville Regional. Hosts Louisville (38-18-1) and Southeast Missouri State (37-20) make up the rest of the group.

The Wolverines slipped into the NCAA tournament by winning the Big Ten Conference tournament title. Michigan, who finished second at the 2019 College World Series, is looking to get on the run again.

“All in all, I think everyone on this team is just blessed to be able to be together for another week and of course hopefully more after that,” Wolverine shortstop Riley Bertram said via MLive.com. “I don’t think it really mattered to us to see who we had. I think just the opportunity to go to a regional — we’re going into regional, familiar territory of Louisville. But like coaches [Erik] Bakich said it’s a regional one-game at this point and it’s the Oregon Ducks.

Bertram played for the Wolverines when they reached the College World Series Finals three years ago. Three players remain from this Wolverines roster that lost to Vanderbilt.

Michigan and Oregon meet on the Diamond for the first time ever. The Ducks missed out on the Pac-12 Conference title and are looking to bounce back with a strong performance at the Big Baseball Dance.

“They’re a very physical group, well trained,” Ducks head coach Mark Wasikowski said on Oregon Live. “You have three or four runners that have 10+ stolen base tries and a little more speed. Coach [Erik] Bakich is a guy who always likes to push the envelope in terms of aggressiveness on the bases. They should be a well-rehearsed team. You start with a left hander [Connor O’Halloran] this is an experienced guy, has good numbers. He can throw multiple pitches for strikes, big boy that’s got a good live arm.”

Oregon has a solid lineup and will look to challenge Michigan’s pitching.

“This year we’ve broken up to 10 offensive records so we’re very proud of the physicality our group brings to the table and we know the field we’re playing against in this particular region is a very physical group is who likes to follow along and swing the bats,” Wasikowski said.
