Grand Slam victory for Anna-Maria Wagner – Herbst wins bronze

Anna-Maria Wagner was seeded number one and started the competition with an early win by Uchi-mata after just 48 seconds against Chloe Buttigieg of France in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals, the 26-year-old from Württemberg put down Karen Stevenson from the Netherlands again after 1:43 minutes with Uchi-mata and thus reached the final.

Daniel Herbst won in round two early by kesa-gatame against Enrico Bergamelli from Italy. In the quarter-finals, the 27-year-old from Leipzig, who had already taken third places at the European Opens in Warsaw and Prague this year, lost after a strong performance to the Georgian Onise Saneblidze shortly before the end of the fight with a Wazaari rating. In the consolation round, Herbst defeated Hungary’s Zsombor Veg with a Wazaari score for Soto-maki-komi. In the “small final” he beat third-placed Ilia Sulamanidze from Georgia after 91 seconds with a choke technique. For Daniel Herbst it was his first Grand Slam medal.

National coach Pedro Guedes praised his protégé: “Daniel Herbst did a very good job and showed a strong performance. Winning in Georgia against a World Championship bronze medalist from Georgia is difficult.”

Louis Mai from the 1. Mannheimer JC lost in his first fight in the class up to 100 kg to the Georgian Ilia Sulamanidze. Erik Abramov from UJKC Potsdam had to admit defeat against Richard Sipocz from Hungary in the first round of the class over 100 kg.

The German Judo Federation (DJB) took fourth place in the medal table with one gold medal, one silver medal and two bronze medals behind hosts Georgia (5/4/5), France (2/0/4) and South Korea (2/0/0 ). On Friday Pauline Starke from Judo Team Hannover won silver in the class up to 57 kg and on Saturday Sarah Mäkelburg from Sportunion Annen won bronze in the class up to 70 kg.

The next stop on the IJF World Tour is the Grand Slam from June 24th to 26th, 2022 in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia).
