Fran Garrigós, from Famu, hangs the gold in Oran

The judoka of the Vigo Famu Francisco Garrigós yesterday won the first gold medal for Spain in the Mediterranean Games, which are being held these days in the Algerian city of Oran. In addition, the Spanish Ana Pérez also added a bronze medal in the -52 kilos category, which places Spain with 9 distinctions so far in the classification led by Turkey, Italy and Algeria.

Garrigós, with two European gold medals (2021 and 2022), won the Tunisian Fraj Dhouibi yesterday in the -60 kilos final by an ippon and thus revalidated the title won 4 years ago, at the 2018 Tarragona Games. The runner-up in the world and European bronze Ana Pérez Box added shortly after, also by ippon, a bronze to the Spanish medal table.

The Famu judoka was pleased to have opened the door to gold medals for Spain at the Oran event. “I am very happy to have won the first gold medal for the Spanish delegation. There are still many days left and I hope that many more will come”, he pointed out in statements to the Spanish Olympic Committee. On the day of competition, he considered that it ended better than it began. “I have gone from less to more. In the first fights he was a little more nervous. The final has been the one that came out the best and the one that leaves me the happiest of all”, he summed up. Lastly, he thanked the support received from Spanish judo: “Thank you very much for following me. There are many more medals to be won”.
