Ex-NBA professional Jerebko leaves Moscow after controversial transfer

Former NBA pro Jonas Jerebko has left CSKA Moscow three months after his controversial move to the Russian capital. The change proved to be “difficult in several ways” for the Swede, the basketball club said.

The 35-year-old moved to Moscow in the middle of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and was then expelled from the Swedish national team. His departure from CSKA does not change this decision, the Swedish association SBBF said on Saturday.

Jerebko played for Sweden in the World Cup qualifier in February. The team is a possible opponent of the German team in the second group stage.

Jerebko, so far the only Swede in the NBA, has been without a club since January 2021 after a commitment to BK Chimki and, despite the political situation, decided to work in the Russian capital. CSKA was excluded from the EuroLeague as a result of the sanctions, and German national player Johannes Voigtmann left the club.

Between 2009 and 2018, winger Jerebko had played 635 times in the NBA, the longest streak with the Detroit Pistons.
