The victory of the Estonian crews Ota Tanaka and Martin Jarveoja ended the Sardinian WRC rally in Italy. In second place are the Irish crew Craig Brin and Paul Neigl from M-Sport, while the podium is closed by Tanaka teammates Dani Sordo and Candido Karera from Hyundai.
The Sardinian WRC Rally was the fifth stage of the 2022 World Rally Championship season. The harsh road conditions with a very pronounced trajectory cleaning effect were suitable to curb Kalle Rovanpera’s dominance this season. Despite his starting position, Soms had won the last three rallies on three different surfaces.
We have already reported that on the first day after a fierce fight with Tanaka, the Finn, Esapeka Lapi, who had been spending part of the season, had become the leader, but on the morning of the second day, the accident gave Tanak the lead. After a very convincing performance, the Estonian started the last day with a 46-second lead over Brin. Also on the third day, Tanak won two of the four stages and increased the lead to an impressive minute and three seconds. Craig Brin won only one stage during the whole rally, but was able to keep a very steady pace all the time and increased his lead over the experienced Dani Sordo to almost half a minute.

In the short third day, the battles for the positions were missed, but Tierry Neivill proved his speed once again with two victories in the special stages and the victory in Powerstage brought an additional five points in the overall standings. A quiet rally this time gave way to the overall leader Rovanper. Stable performance allowed him to finish in fifth place and four points from Powerstage allow the bag to further increase its already impressive advantage in the overall standings. Praise is once again to Pierre Louis Lubé, who has literally come to life since moving to M-Sport and finished fourth in his career, holding Rovanper for 53 seconds. For Toyota, this was the first pedestal-free rally since the 2019 Turkish Rally.
Andress Mikelsen took the lead in the WRC2 class, but technical problems led him to withdraw in the middle of the second day. Prior to that, favorites such as Johann Rosel and Theme Suninen were also hit. This allowed Nikolai Grjazin, who won his second career victory, to take the lead.
The next stage will be the legendary Safari Rally in Kenya, which was won by Sebastien Ojie last year. Both Ojie and Labe will be back in line. We will find out how they will do in the week of Midsummer from June 23 to 26.
