Cano returns to San Diego with minor league deal

With no room on the major league roster, the Padres assigned Robinson Cano last week, hoping to keep him in the organization. This Friday his wish came true.

Cano signed a minor league deal with the club and will join Triple-A affiliate El Paso.

“He wants to have consistent at-bats there,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said.

“I talked to him. He wasn’t getting many shifts in New York and not here. He loves being here with the boys and fits in well. The last thing you want is to give up thinking, ‘Hey, if I get some turns, I can show what I still have in the tank.’” she added.

Canó has a long history as one of the best second basemen of his generation, with a career batting average of .301 and eight All-Star appearances.

But this year he’s just hitting .149 in 77 times at bat, between the Mets and Padres.

If he makes an impact in El Paso, it’s possible he’ll rejoin the big team at some point. The Padres would certainly benefit from a power lefty bat.
