Karla Borger and Julia Sude as well as Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann reach the round of 16 of the Beach Volleyball World Championship. In contrast, the time in Rome has already expired for the only German men’s team.

Karla Borger/Julia Sude and Svenja Müller/Cinja Tillmann were the first German teams to reach the round of 16 at the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rome. The two Stuttgart players Borger/Sude beat Kelly Cheng and Betsi Flint from the USA 2:1 (21:17, 11:21, 15:12) on Wednesday. The third place in the European Championship had to give up a set for the first time in their fourth World Cup game.

“It was a blatant match with lots of ups and downs,” said Julia Sude. “We’re glad we closed the sack.” In the round of the top 16, the two Germans will meet Canadians Sophie Bukovec and Brandie Wilkerson on Thursday.

The newly formed Hamburg duo Müller/Tillmann also had to fight hard against the Finns Taru Lahti-Liukkonen and Niina Ahtiainen to win 2:1 (21:18, 20:22, 18:16).

On the other hand, the World Cup has already ended for the only German men’s team. Hamburg’s Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler were somewhat surprisingly beaten by Poland’s Piotr Kantor and Maciej Rudol with a score of 0:2 (19:21, 19:21). Wickler had won silver three years ago at the World Championships in Hamburg with his then partner Julius Thole. After Thole’s resignation last fall, he has only been playing with Ehlers since this season.
