BBL also on ARD and on the TV station Bild

BerlinDue to the new media contract, some games of the Basketball Bundesliga will also be free to air in the future.

From the 2023/2024 season, according to information from the German Press Agency, one game per match day will be shown on the free TV broadcaster Bild. In addition, the ARD wants to show more basketball.

“We agreed in advance with Christian Seifert what we would like to have sublicensed in the event that his company acquires the rights,” said ARD sports coordinator Axel Balkausky of the dpa. “We will now regulate this contractually with each other and will then announce it in detail.”

The media company S-Media of the former DFL boss Seifert and the media group Axel Springer had secured the Bundesliga rights for six seasons from the 2023/2024 season. All games should run on a new payment platform on the Internet.

The agreement with S-Media is “a clear signal from the ARD, the leagues that have an interest in showing even more extensively on all our playout channels and thus continuing the course of presenting the diversity of sport in the programs in the future”, said Balkausky: “And gladly with partners with whom we can bring the sport forward together, like S-Nation Media here.”

The former DFL boss has now secured TV rights for three leagues together with the Axel Springer media group: table tennis, volleyball and basketball. There is also interest in ice hockey and handball.

In the coming season, the basketball Bundesliga will run again with long-standing media partner Telekom via MagentaSport. Most recently, there were free TV images on Sport 1. Telekom also owns the rights to the EuroLeague and the EuroCup, as well as international matches.
