Baseball, Landesliga Ost – Danube Titans: Expected split at the start of the season

W4 RED DEVILS – DANUBE TITANS 6:24.

The Danube Titans, the cooperation team from Tulln and Klosterneuburg, recently finally started the fresh season of the baseball state league East. Last season, the Titans showed a significant improvement in performance compared to previous years and, somewhat surprisingly, fought for an excellent third place. Accordingly, the expectations for this season are now higher than they used to be.

However, the first game was a real Herculean task for the titans. On the program was the away game against the undefeated leaders from Schrems. The game promised to be a real challenge from the outset as the Schremser have six games under their belt and are on an unequivocal winning streak while it was the Titans’ first game.

However, Titans starting pitcher Dominik Riedl started well and after the first inning it was only 2-0 for the hosts from Schrems. The Titans did well on defense. In the second inning, however, the hosts turned up the heat and added a whopping eight points. With the score at 10-0, the game was decided early because the Titans just couldn’t find their game on offense and didn’t bring any points on the scoreboard. With a final score of 15:0, the Titans conceded their first “shutout” – a game in which you don’t score a single point.

Finally, Andrés Fuentealba came on the mound for the Titans and ended the game without conceding a point. With this performance, the veteran, who had no experience as a pitcher, recommended himself for further assignments in this position.

Then it was against the Woodquarter Red Devils, against whom both games were clearly won last year. Even today, after starting pitcher Greg Gaines returned from injury with the RedDevils, the Danube Titans were to be favoured. With the Titans, on the other hand, Stephan Unger was the starting pitcher on the mound.

Both pitchers had the batsmen under control for long stretches and it was a balanced game. In the third inning, however, the Titans suddenly had their sights set perfectly and were able to score one run after the other. Even a pitcher change by the Red Devils could not stop them in this phase.

In the end, the Titans won 24:6 thanks to Stephan Unger’s solid pitching performance. Notable was a Grand Slam home run by Davis Gibbs. All bases are occupied by players and the home run equals four points.

The Titans can be satisfied with this first day of play. Schrems is probably a category too big again, but behind them the race for the top positions is open. The next few weeks will show where the Titans are headed in the table.
