Athletics is not what it used to be, Dvořák misses it. The decathlon fighter became a gardener

He celebrated his 50th birthday in May and has been living outside the sports environment for three years. In the podcast, which is preparing the project No Phrases in cooperation with the online daily Aktuálně.cz, former decathlon fighter and former head coach of the Czech athletics team revealed what is currently filling him after the jubilee or how he remembers some specific disciplines.

He didn’t like the direction athletics and sports were going in general, so he wanted a change, he wanted to rest, so the chief coach of athletes at the union resigned. Now, in his recent 50s, he feels good and doesn’t think he’s overcoming a life milestone.

“Someone told me I was halfway there, so that would be nice. Otherwise, someone still welcomes me to a club, a club in their fifties. But I don’t take it that way, after that jubilee I feel the same as the day before, nothing has not changed, “Dvořák admitted in the podcast.

After leaving the world of athletics, he threw himself into one of his loves, gardening. He became a co-owner of a gardening company and helps customers beautify the surroundings of the house.

“Even athletics is still my love, but it’s no longer the sport it used to be. I hear it from several angles that sport as such has changed. It doesn’t attract my attention as soon as possible and I work on a job that fills me,” he said. yes.

The worries associated with managing the athletic team have reportedly cost him a lot of nerves in the previous ten years, and he certainly doesn’t miss that now.

“I was very relieved, I breathe better and my life took a much nicer direction. In addition, I lost about 15 kilos in those three years, I am back on the race weight and I feel good,” said the three-time world champion.

Physical work does not bother him, at least his body does not show it as much as during sharp training sessions.

“It doesn’t matter so much here when your legs hurt. When it came to athletics, you just didn’t run, even if you wanted to. It didn’t work, the body thought the road wasn’t going this way, and it knocked me to zero.”

He skidded in the tunnel

In the podcast, he also recalled a time when he led a hectic life and tried to prosecute his family in addition to sports. His trip to the maternity hospital was especially dramatic when his wife gave birth to twins.

“I trained at Juliska and hurried to Apolinář. When I miss the traffic offenses, the worst was probably when I came across a congested tunnel on Letná and turned the car in the opposite direction through the handbrake to avoid traffic jams. In the end, I managed to do it in time. , “he recalled.

But he also runs at full throttle in the horticultural industry, because he knows that he cannot rest.

“Sometimes my body reveals that I don’t want to get up, but I end up getting up. Sometimes I say to myself that I should slow down, but I can’t,” he admitted.

He already has several gardens behind him, which he likes to remember. For example, here at Špála’s villa in Ořechovka or at building a bio-pool at a family house in Stodůlky.

“I like that even though the designs come from the same pen of the architect, in the end it’s always a different job of trying to work with the space and the wishes of the customer,” he explained, which makes gardening the most fulfilling.

He still has one work dream, he would like to meet the actor Josef Somr. “We have already done something for him in the garden, but he is an older gentleman and the last two years have not been ideal, so there was no opportunity to meet him, it would be nice if it worked out once,” Dvořák added.
