Argentina will host the South American Women’s Basketball Championship

The 37th edition of the South American Women’s Basketball Championship will take place from August 1 to 6 in the central Argentine province of San Luis, the organizers, who also want to host the 2024 World Cup, reported Tuesday.

Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Paraguay will compete in two venues, one located in the city of Villa Mercedes and the other in San Luis, capital of the homonymous province.

The contest was presented this Tuesday in an act that was attended by the governor of San Luis, Alberto Rodríguez Saá; the Minister of Sports of Argentina, Matías Lammens; the provincial sports secretary, Cintia Ramírez; and the president of the Argentine Basketball Confederation, Fabián Borro.

The top four teams will qualify for the Americup 2023, qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Borro expressed his desire for Argentina to host the next Women’s Basketball World Cup in 2024 and described this province as “a possible scenario.”

“We are going to look for the Basketball World Cup in Argentina. The infrastructure is very good and we have athletes. Leaders like these are needed, with firm goals,” said Rodríguez Saá.

Lammens said that the South American will serve to “promote tourism and sports both for the economic impact generated by these events and for the possibility of showing the wonderful San Luis destinations to the continent.”
