Andy Murray was returning to an ATP tournament since his departure from the Madrid Masters 1000 in early May. He returned for the grass season in a Challenger tournament (he made the semifinals in Surbiton) and, at the ATP 250 in Stuttgart, he successfully debuted against the Australian Christopher O’Connell.
The Brit knew how to turn around a match that had him breaking down and relied on touches to mislead his opponent, displaying high-level tennis on his favorite surface and advancing to the second round by a comfortable 6-4 and 6-3.
Now he could face in the next round the one who was his executioner on his return, a Denis Kudla who beat him last week at the Surbiton Challenger, or the always dangerous Kazakh Alexander Bublik.
