ZHUHAI, China, June 17, 2022 /CNW/ — China’s first modern liberal arts college, Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC), launched the Pacific Alliance of Liberal Arts Colleges (PALAC) in conjunction with eight other liberal arts colleges.
By tackling global education issues and climate change, the PALAC alliance creates connections between different like-minded institutions working on liberal arts exchange programs and scholarships to benefit students and the region.
Founding institutions also include Soka University of America, Pomona College, Puget Sound University (USA), Quest University (Canada) and Fulbright University (Vietnam).
The PALAC Alliance promotes joint programming and multilateral cooperation initiatives in the field of innovative pedagogy through a set of working groups.
The various groups focus on liberal arts development and global issues, conducting collaborative research on climate change.
They also discuss exchanges between faculty and administrators, sharing of intellectual property and digital resources.
This new alliance held its first annual global liberal arts conference on June 3-4, 2022.
As one of the founding members, UIC has a diverse faculty from over 30 countries and regions in which English is the language of instruction.
Located in Zhuhai City, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, UIC shares its person-centered perspective in international liberal arts by drawing on traditional Chinese and Western cultural resources.
Of the 2021 UIC graduates who confirmed their internship, 82% chose to pursue studies abroad; and of these graduate students, 81% have been admitted to the top 100 universities in the world according to the QS World University Rankings.
Bae Geuna, a marketing student from Korea, took Chinese language classes for three semesters and spent her last two Chinese New Year holidays with local friends.
She said UIC helped her understand China from a global perspective. Some of her classmates took cultural classes like Chinese archery and guqin.
The multicultural environment has also benefited Xia Qing, a UIC graduate who is pursuing a PhD at Oxford University on a full scholarship.
She pointed to the close teacher-student mentorship in UIC’s intellectually stimulating campus, a typical liberal arts perk that guides her future career.
UIC’s membership in the PALAC alliance is in line with its commitment to promote the internationalization of Chinese higher education, which has been one of its core values since its inception in 2005.
Additionally, UIC has established numerous partnerships with prestigious academics, including the University of Edinburgh, University of California, Berkeley Extension, University of Seoul, and University of Technology in Sydneywhich cover the entireEuropeNorth America, Asia and Oceania.
