For the first time in six years, the best female golfers in Europe are teeing off in Germany. Many players from the national top are at the start. But the main focus is on the young Swede Linn Grant.

Nfter six years of abstinence, a major international women’s golf tournament is taking place in Germany. From Thursday to Sunday the players of the Ladies European Tour play on the difficult southern course of the Seddiner See Golf and Country Club south of Berlin. The field of the Amundi German Masters, endowed with 300,000 euros, is impressive.

Among others, Olivia Cowan, Isabell Gabsa, Karolin Lampert and Esther Henseleit are among the top Germans at the start. The latter is traveling from the USA, where the 23-year-old is playing on the American LPGA Tour. Last season she earned a good $435,000 in prize money. Although the LPGA is significantly more lucrative, there was no question for Hamburg’s Sportswoman of the Year 2019 whether she would travel to Seddin.

“I can hardly wait for a professional women’s tournament to finally take place in Germany again,” says Henseleit, especially since it will be her first professional event in her home country: “I hope that many golf fans will be there and think so it’s nice that women’s golf is getting more attention as a result.”

Among the international starters, the main focus should be on Linn Grant, who wrote golf history a few weeks ago and is currently the rising star in European women’s golf.

Historic victory in Sweden

There has been a mixed tournament in the calendar of the European men’s tour since 2020, in which both men and women start. In her native Sweden, Grant was the first lady to win this Sacandinavian mixed. And this with an impressive performance. Grant, who only switched to the professional tour last August and has since won five tournaments, ended up nine shots ahead of her compatriot, European Ryder Cup captain Hendrik Stenson. The reward: a victory check for $320,000.

“I’m really hoping for more recognition and more sponsors for the female professional golfers,” Grant said afterwards, although he was also critical. There was no real togetherness on the golf course in Sweden: “All week I had the feeling that the women were playing against the men.”

Seddin is now only against women again. And the victory should probably only lead to Grant. The 22-year-old is currently the clear leader in the annual rankings on the European tour. All four tournament rounds will be shown live on Sky and golf.de.
