Alaba, Rüdiger and Co.: “Africa Power” – Big fuss about a front page of “Marca”

Austria’s team captain David Alaba, Germany’s Antonio Rüdiger and Frenchmen Aurelien Tchouameni, Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga and goalgetter Karim Benzema grace the front page of the Spanish newspaper “Marca”. Nothing unusual for the club, which are very close to Los Blancos. But the title in the center of the cover causes irritation in many places. “Africa Power” is written in large letters above the outline of the African continent. On Twitter – where the newspaper shared the page online – there was criticism from many quarters. Many would see “an Austrian, a German and four Frenchmen” on the cover.

Only Camavinga saw the light of day in Angola and therefore not in Europe. “They are all proud of their African roots even though they grew up far from the continent,” the article wrote, and the story also included a list of players who once played for Real and also have “African blood” in them Veins would have: “They continue a path taken in the days of Eto’o, Makelele, Geremi, Diarra and Zidane.”
