After expulsion of Francona, Guardians come back against Oakland

CLEVELAND (AP) — Andres Gimenez singled in the go-ahead run as part of a four-run eighth inning, and the Cleveland Guardians rallied to beat the Oakland Athletics 8-4 Thursday night.

With their manager Terry Francona gone, the Guardians condemned Oakland to its ninth straight loss.

Gimenez singled to left field off Lou Trivino (1-5) for the Guardians, who moved above .500 for the first time since May 9, when they went 15-14.


Rookie Richie Palacios added a two-run single in the eighth inning, and another run came on Oakland’s throwing error.

Cleveland rallied after Francona was ejected in the sixth inning for arguing with the umpires. At that point, the Guardians trailed 4-2.

José Ramírez and Josh Naylor homered, while Enyel de los Santos (1-0) got the victory.

Cleveland has won eight of 10 games. Dominican rookie Oscar González had four hits.

For the Athletics, the Dominicans Ramón Laureano 5-0, Cristian Pache 3-1, Luis Barrera 1-1. Panamanian Christian Behancourt 4-3 with two runs scored and two produced. Venezuelan Elvis Andrus 3-1 with a run scored.

For the Guardians, the Dominicans Ramírez 4-1 with a run scored and an RBI, González 4-4 with an RBI. The Colombian Óscar Mercado without an official shift but with a score. The Venezuelan Giménez 4-1 with one scored and one produced.
