Lois Petit finished just off the podium in the -48 kg category on Saturday at the European Judo Open in Madrid. The Belgian, 61st in the world, lost on points to Azerbaijani Leyla Aliyeva (IJF 40) in the fight for bronze.Beaten by the French Melanie Vieu (IJF 33) in the quarter-finals, Petit had been sent to the repechages. She won there on waza-ari against the Spaniard Gemma Maria Gomez Antona (IJF 81), earning the right to fight for bronze. Facing Aliyeva, Lois Petit received three penalty points which cost her the victory and the podium. In the same category, Jente Verstraeten was taken out in the 2nd round, while Marie Sadounie was eliminated after a fight in -63 kg. (Belga)
