Wout van Aert and the Tour de France: “That would be a shame for the cycling fan and himself”

There is no doubt that Wout van Aert is at home in many markets. Alberto Contador also looks with amazement at our compatriot.

“Wout is a phenomenon. I have a lot of admiration for him,” Alberto Contador told Sporza.

“In last year’s Tour he won a time trial, the Ventoux stage and on the Champs-Elysées. In December and January he takes care of the show in cyclo-cross, in April he rides cobblestone monuments. Van Aert always provides a spectacle.”

Should Wout van Aert set his sights on overall victory in the Tour de France, Contador fears that cycling will be the big loser, even if Van Aert would win the Tour.

“Due to his versatility, Van Aert is an attractive rider. But if he aims for a final classification in the Tour, he will bring less spectacle. That would be a shame not only for the cycling fan, but also for himself.”
